Modelling of sediment nutrient fluxes for a pulsed organic load

ثبت نشده
چکیده

A sediment model has been developed to simulate the Sediment Oxygen Demand (SOD) and sediment nutrient fluxes after a sudden input of Particulate Organic Matter (POM). Compared with previous sediment models, the main model advancements are the use of a continuous function to represent the kinetics of POM diagenesis and inclusion of the biomass content in POM diagenesis. Laboratory experiments also were carried out to investigate the SOD dynamics and sediment nutrient fluxes after an input of fish food pellets into the sediment. The simulation results of SOD and nutrient fluxes compared fairly well with the experimental measurements. Keyword: Ammonia nitrogen, dissolved oxygen (DO), nutrients, sediment oxygen demand (SOD), sediment flux, water quality modelling.

ECO: A Generic Eutrophication Model Including Comprehensive Sediment-Water Interaction

The content and calibration of the comprehensive generic 3D eutrophication model ECO for water and sediment quality is presented. Based on a computational grid for water and sediment, ECO is used as a tool for water quality management to simulate concentrations and mass fluxes of nutrients (N, P, Si), phytoplankton species, detrital organic matter, electron acceptors and related substances. ECO...

Estimating Sediment and Nutrient Loads in Gippsland Lakes Catchments Using E2 Modelling Framework

The deterioration of water quality in Gippsland Lakes, indicated by severe algal blooms, and influenced by the flow of nutrients from the Lakes catchments, has received increasing attention. For priority setting on appropriate management actions, a clear understanding is needed of spatial and temporal dynamics of sediment and nutrient fluxes in the catchments of Gippsland Lakes. A number of stu...

Statistical Modeling of Variability in Sediment-Water Nutrient and Oxygen Fluxes

Mineralisation of organic detritus in the marine surficial sediments generates a flux of dissolved inorganic nutrient between the sediment and overlying water column. This is a key process in the marine ecosystem, which links the food webs of the sea-floor and the overlying water-column, and is potentially affected by a range of interacting environmental and sedimentary factors. Here, we use Ge...

Benthic Nutrient Fluxes from Mangrove Sediments of an Anthropogenically Impacted Estuary in Southern China

Mangroves serve as either sinks or sources for inorganic and organic nutrients and can mitigate anthropogenic nutrient pollution, control the production in adjacent systems, and prevent eutrophication. To better understand the nutrient dynamics in a subtropical mangrove, we employed a three-way approach in the Nanliu River Estuary, southern China: Pore water profiles and sediment incubations re...

A biogeochemical model for metabolism and nutrient cycling in a Southeastern Piedmont impoundment

While non-point nutrient loads are important determinants of biological productivity in Southeastern Piedmont impoundments, productivity can be attenuated by concomitant sediment loads that reduce the biological availability of these nutrients. A biogeochemical model is proposed that explicitly accounts for the effects of sedimentenutrient interactions on multiple components of phytoplankton me...
